North Queensland extends along the coast from Bowen in the south through
Townsville, population of around 150,000 and Queensland second most populous
city, up to Cape York. Cairns, the regional city of the Far North is much
smaller, at 66,000 but is the third most populous city in the state.North
Queensland continues westwards to Mornington and the Gulf of Carpentaria. With
the beautiful beaches and the Great Barrier Reef to the east and the magnificent
rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands to the west North Queensland is a tourist
mecca, providing the main industry of the area.Visitors should avoid swimming in
the ocean from November to April because of the deadly box jellyfish, follow
local advice about swimming areas. There is also sugarcane and banana
farming.Real estate is much cheaper than in capital cities, particularly in
Cairns and Townsville. These cities have the bulk of the real estate, with both
