Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory, is the only large settlement in the Northern Territory. It has a tropical climate with the dry season May-November and the wet season December-April.
Darwin has several military bases including Coonawarra Naval Base, Larrakeyeh Army Base and RAAF Base Darwin. Important areas of the city include Darwin Harbour, Casuarina Coastal Reserve, Darwin Botanic Gardens, Darwin International Airport, Casuarina Village Shopping Centre, Marrara Sporting Complex, and the Royal Darwin Hospital. The stunning World Heritage site Kakadu National Park is 253 km to the east. You will need a 4WD vehicle, or relax in style on a coach tour. Small mini-bus and boat tours are also available. Darwin has a large Indigenous population, around 9%. Major industries include defence, finance and administration, health and education, tourism and hospitality. Darwin was largely destroyed by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. A massive rebuilding program has seen Darwin grow to larger than its original size. Dwellings have been rebuilt to withstand cyclonic winds. But much of low-lying land near rivers and creeks is subject to flooding. If in doubt you should obtain advice on flood risk and flood insurance. The southern suburbs have substantial townhouses and high rise units. Elsewhere freestanding houses are predominant. Property prices vary, but there are some very good deals, so check with real estates.
