Hobart is the second oldest capital city in Australia, and is known for its workers' cottages, heritage parks and gardens, including the Botanic Gardens on the west bank of the Derwent. Hobart is also a port with the city centre right on the waterfront, where you can find superb seafood restaurants. The city has many busy markets including the large Salamanca Market with many quality discounts and excellent food. Industries include wine, beer and tourism and hospitality, but unemployment is relative high compared with the other capital cities. Hobart has many outdoor activities to enjoy including sailing, boating, fishing, bushwalking, horseriding, surfing, kayaking, and cycling. Hobart has poor public transport, so you need a car. Hobart is a great place to start your tour of Tasmania, with the untamed beauty to the west of the South-western National Park with its glorious temperate rainforests, and the many beautiful beaches along the east coast including the stunning Freycinet National Park. Hobart real estate is significantly cheaper than the mainland capital cities. Both houses and units are common.
